Lost with all of my questions

I was a day behind and finally got to watch the season finale of Lost. Wow. I'm not going to rehash the episode, but rather I'm going to make a running list of the questions I have after this episode. Kind of spoilers ahead.

1.) How did Penny know what to look for in her search for Desmond? Yeah, yeah, if you have enough money and desire you can find everyone--I got that. But why search for electromagnetic fields?

2.) Who is Libby? Mental patient? Wife of dead mean who owned a boat? Psychiatrist/psychologist? All of the above? And now that she's dead, how will we ever find out?

3.) Why do the Others specifically want Jack, Kate and Sawyer, but no one else?

4.) What happened to Kelvin (aka the US soldier who taught Sayid how to torture his superior in Iraq, according to imdb his name was Joe Inman when he was in the Army) that he was left alone on the island? I know his companion committed suicide, but why didn't reinforcements go out there at some point?

5.) The experiment was being done on the people in the Pearl (obviously the pneumatic tube didn't take their log books to anyone who would read them). But why? And who was monitoring them?

6.) Kelvin/Joe Inman made the painting that Locke saw in the black light--is it really a map of the island?

7.) Has everyone just given up on the idea that they can be rescued? Are they all just thinking that they are stuck on this island because it has some type of power? If not, why didn't anyone (Sayid) try to work with the boat's communication mechanism?

8.) With that in mind, why doesn't anyone on the island ever tell anyone else what they have found? Didn't Locke think that Sayid might be able to use the equipment in the Pearl to get them out? Locke didn't believe that the button did anything anymore, so wouldn't he now want to be rescued as much as anyone else?

9.) Why haven't we seen any signs of the children the Others took from the tail end of the plane?
And, of course, the questions about what happens next:

10.) Will Hurley warn anyone, or just follow the Others' orders? (Hurley can't keep his mouth shut, I have to assume he will do something.)

11.) Where will the Others take their new prisoners? Will we get to see the Others' camp next season through Jack, Kate and Sawyer's eyes, or are we still stuck on the beach with everyone else?

12.) Will Michael make it to the real world? Will he regain his conscience and try to save his friends?

13.) Did Locke and Eko make it (I think yes)? Did Desmond (I think no)?

And, of course, perhaps the biggest question of all:

14.) Who are the Others?!?! Why are they dressing up to look like jungle people when they are in fact clean-shaven Americans? What did they get out of Walt (we do know he has some sort of special abilities)? What is their purpose? Are they connected to the experiment that was taking place on the islands?

Anyone have any thoughts on any of this?

Good thoughts! I hadn't thought of the possibility of Libby being a twin.

I did hear the wind say "Elizabeth" when it started talking. I wonder where that fits in.

Hi, first-time poster here... love your site.

Love Lost, too! So many answers (finally), so many new questions. Here's thoughts on a few:

Penny is not necessarily looking for Desmond. The quote at the end was we think we found IT, not HIM. Given her Widmore connections, she could be looking for the Island. (Wasn't Widmore the company that Charlie had a job interview with when he was in withdrawal in season 1?)

I like Laura Holt's idea of Libby being a twin; it resonates with the Widmore-related "Bad Twin" manuscript. Also, someone made a neat point on another board that Libby's (supposed) late husband and Hurley's imaginary friend were both named David/Dave. Coincidence?

I'm pretty convinced there are Other Others. My brother's been pushing this theory for a while, and I think the finale clinched it.

Finally, let's all pause to appreciate the appearance of Caleb Nichol as the evil Widmore patriarch. Reminds me of better days on the OC....

These are good points, TV Junkie.

I, too, just saw someone point out that Libby's husband and Hurley's imaginary friend have the same name. It can't be a coincidence.

And another good point about the good twin/bad twin manuscript. Even if the manuscript isn't connected at all to Libby, it would have been some nice foreshadowing.

And, you might be right about Charlie's interview being with Widmore! But I firmly believe that Penny is looking for Desmond.

A few points and a few questions of my own:

1. I completely agree with Holt on the Widmore issue. He is a major part of Dharma making Penny at the center of this.

2. What language where the monitors speaking? I want to know.

3. I assume that Libby is a nickname for Elizabeth but I like the twin idea. Btw, she is under contract to appear in some episodes next season.

4. Locke knew the answer to the joke about the Snowmen. Desmond didn't when Inman asked it to him--Inman was expecting someone (his replacement?) who would know the answer. This seems very important to me. Why would Locke know? Am I forgetting something?

5. There is, in my mind, no way Locke is dead. I have to assume Eko is coming back as well. I also have heard that Desmond is supposedly coming back as well.

6. The foot--was that freaky or what.

7. Can we have more enlightenment philosophers, please--We have John Locke (whose father is named after Locke's patron), Hume (Desmond), Rousseau. Am I forgetting anyone? Do we have a Hobbes? Montesquieu perhaps?

8. Has anyone read Bad Twin yet? it is out, correct.

And now I have to wait until September! (Supposedly, next season, Lost will air in 2 11 week blocks with no repeats! Yay!)

My own research continues to support the Portugese hypothesis and the idea they were Brazilian. Btw, the snow issue keeps popping my head--the snowman joke, Desmond's snow globe comments, the polar bear, and, of course, the final scene in Antarctica (?).

Isaac, I can answer some of these questions:

They were speaking Portugese

If Libby is a twin, then Elizabeth is a nickname for Libby, and the Libby we knew would be the "good" twin, whereas the woman in the insane asylum wouldn't be named Elizabeth or Libby--something totally different.

As for the snowman joke, I believe when John first met Desmond, when they first found the hatch, Desmond shared the joke with John. He may not have told him the punchline, I don't quite remember. At that time Desmond also told John Kelvin had told him he was "just saving the world" which we saw again in the finale
