Idol Snoozefest
In past years, the Season Finale of American Idol has been one of my favorite television watching nights of the year. In particular, the finale with Fantasia stayed on my Tivo for months and months because her performance of the single "I Believe" was infused with so much raw emotion that I watched it every time I needed a good cry. This year, myeh. Taylor should win and he did a pretty great job, but nothing to get too excited about. Katharine really blew it and I'd be SHOCKED if she won.
Until next year.

I really, really, really hate to say this but...
Taylor deserves to win.
I really dislike Taylor, but he sounded good on his first and last songs last night (the last of which was some cheesy made-for-Idol number).
Katharine sang "Over the Rainbow" better this week than last, but other than that, she did not do a great job. The made-for-Idol ditty she sang was just horrendous. The song was treacly and worse, it was not written for someone with Katharine's voice.
Yet again I realized that Katharine just does not have the power in her vocals to pull off big songs. And I think that, as a female singer, that is what is expected of her (and what she tries to do). There are certainly female singers who don't have that ability, but they usually have well-written songs. Katharine did not have that last night.
I also realized that, in addition to his mannerisms, one of the reasons I hate Taylor is that he reminds me too much of Michael McDonald, and I just cannot stand Michael McDonald. But Taylor sounded good last night, and deserves to win.
I hope for something better next year as well.
In fairness to Kat, her voice was clearly going (it was especially noticeable in the dress rehearsal footage), but even if she'd been in peak form, I think this would have been a rout. Taylor is just a much more confident performer, so that even when the vocals are off or the song sucks, his personality makes him seem better than he is. Kat basically has to be perfect every time vocally to compensate for iffy stage presence, and she was only close to perfect on "Rainbow."
Did anyone ever in a million years think Taylor was going to win? I'm still shocked that Chris D. left a few weeks ago and I'm still wishing it was Elliott whose CD I'd be buying in the coming year. I still get choked up thinking about Elliott's farewell video -- it epitomized everything I love about Idol. The pharmacy clerk getting a shot. Sob.
I have to agree, Taylor all the way...and I NEVER would have predicted him as top two when this season started!!!!
Something about Kat irks me....she tries to be humble, but I think she is full of herself
