Attack of the City Shorts
And we thought capri suits were bad. The NY Times style page is heralding the emergence of "city shorts" this spring (like the ones at right from Banana Republic) for both casual wear and . . . get this . . . office attire. And no, this is not a joke. Check out the article.
To be fair, the Times does not seem terribly encouraging of this trend (I think the author might be sympathetic to the Go Fug Yourself rants against "formal shorts"). . . but the author does report an interview with a lawyer who recently wore shorts to the office and said that with the proper jacket she could have gotten away with them in court. Um. Seriously? My favorite quote in the article though is from an Anthropologie employee, who said, dryly "Nobody has great knees," because, word.
I will admit that I have some long shorts (from Anthropologie even), but only because I do not wear short shorts. They're strictly casual wear. Like, hiking in the middle of nowhere casual wear. Or out-of-the-country-somewhere-really-hot-and-a-skirt-is-not-an-option casual wear. But, to the office? You've got to be kidding.

This reminds me of another tragic moment in fashion/baseball history--the Chicago White Sox brief attempt in 1976 to wear shorts as part of the team uniform. For a look at this fashion faux pass, see http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/exhibits/online_exhibits/dressed_to_the_nines/timeline_1976.htm.
