a reason to get satellite radio

According to CNN, starting May 3, Bob Dylan (BOB DYLAN!!) will be hosting a themed hour of music and stories on XM Radio. Future show themes will include "weather" and "whiskey" and "dance". This sounds like it could be fantastic or ridiculous or both. Dylan was a hero in my house, the absolute ultimate bestest songwriter ever. I'm pretty sure my mom played guitar and sang me Dylan tunes while I was in the womb.

Someone out there with XM has got to listen and tell me what this is like. Please!

When I heard about the Dylan show, it pushed me closer to getting XM. With Rapid Robert Zimmerman and Major League Baseball, I am way tempted, but I still have yet to pull the string. (Baby expenses can get quite high!)

I have been a Dylan fan for 20 years (egad, I'm old). While I've only seen him live twice (not counting when he played Highway 61 with Bruce at Shea on the final night of the Rising tour), with Dylan, you know it is going to be one strage ride. His "biography" was fantastic (I hope that the subsequent volumes are ultimately written) as was the Scorsese documentary that PBS aired last fall. Seeing the passion of fans in the early to mid-60s regarding Dylan is hard to comprehend today. From those fans just betrayed by his becoming a rock star to realizing that for at least 2 short years he was, in fact. a rock star is fascinating. He may at times be hard to understand but he is almost always interesting and I'm sure the radio show will be as well.

I've also seen Dylan twice in concert, and as anyone who knows me IRL knows, I HATE concerts, but I loved both of his and would see him again at the drop of a hat. He's a strangely magnetic man.

Thanks for reminding me about the documentary, which I haven't seen. Hopefully it's available on DVD. My mom (who ocasionally reads this blog, Hi Mom! Leave a comment!) has a much more complicated relationship with Dylan than I do, since she was one of those children who memorized the lyrics to Masters of War (when she was an infant natch), and for whom he was powerfully symbolic, but for me he was always just someone whose music I loved.

It is on dvd, but I haven't seen it.

I highly recommend listening to the audio version of "Chronicles." Read by Sean Penn! I have close ties to Minnesota, and so I found the way he talked about being from there very poignant.

On the subject of satellite radio, I have been thinking of getting xm when the new generation of portable receivers comes out, which I think is supposed to be this month. This might put me over the edge. The last thing I need is another gadget to carry around (and keep charged), but one thing I miss with my iPod is being able to listen to the radio. Podcasts just aren't the same.
