Sofia Coppola

I was sort of happy to hear that Sofia Coppola is with child. I'm not sure why, but it made me smile to hear that she is preggers. Apparently she has some French band-leader boyfriend with whom she is having a baby. Last I remember she was married to (or at least seriously dating) Spike Jonze, whose movies Adaptation and Being John Malkovich are two of my favorites.

Speaking of good movies and Sofia Coppola, Lost in Translation is definitely on my Top 30 Movies Ever List. I'm anxious to hear any buzz on her newest movie -- Marie Antoinette -- but I haven't heard anything yet. The fact that Kirsten Dunst is in the leading role does not leave me optimistic.

Ooooh . . . . I just checked imdb and one reviewer already has exclaimed: "I was a bit apprehensive to go see a movie about 18th century France mixed in with some cool hip tunes from the 80's. But this is Sofia Coppola and as expected, she does a magnificent job. It's not a historical movie in the strict sense. You won't learn much about the french revolution or the social context of the times, apart from the fact that the french royalty lived in complete luxury at Versailles. But Marie Antoinette is a very captivating movie about the personal story of this Austrian girl who ends up marrying the heir to the french throne. The images and costumes are simply beautiful. The pace is slow like in Sofia Coppola's previous movies but it's what makes her movies so special. The music is awesome and the acting very good. I just love this movie. Two thumbs way up !!!!"

Now I'm excited.

[ETA: I just checked the comments to this post and apparently Marie Antoinette sucks. The critics at Cannes booed it. Check out this article with more info from Cannes. Now I'm just excited for Pedro Almodovar's Volver. That I hear is excellent.]

Marie Antoinette must be in the air. The Times had this to say on the topic today.

The buzz at Cannes about Marie Antoinette was quite bad, and apparently Sofia was shocked that she was put in the position of defending her film.

I actually like Dunst, and who doesn't love the French Revolution?, so I will probably watch at some point regardless.

I heard it was booed at Cannes. But possibly just because the French didn't like her take on this part of their history.

I just looked this up, and it appears that her boyfriend is in Phoenix, the French band that I posted about last week.

Um, obviously I hadn't heard that. Eek. I'll still see it. But, shoot, I got excited for a minute. I should've known better than to trust even for a second a random imdb reader.

Actually, the Times ran opposing reviews of the movie last week. A.O. Scott liked it while Manohla Dargis (what is the derivation of that name?) did not.

I usually agree with Dargis over Scott, whenever they disagree.
