Forgotten TV Shows: Kate & Allie

Last night I was flipping through the channels (something I still like to do occasionally even during the glorious reign of Tivo) and on the WE channel (yes, I know) they were playing some old episodes of Kate & Allie and I was thrown back into the past. Some of those 80s sitcoms have been so ubiquitous in syndication that one is never in danger of forgetting their existence (The Cosby Show, Cheers, Golden Girls, etc.) but something like Kate & Allie, which was a fairly reasonable hit back in the day - it survived for six seasons! - can so easily just disappear. It's not like it was a great show, but I loved it at the time. It seemed so glamorous, living in that fantastic basement apartment in New York! And Emma was so pretty and stylish . . . I wanted to grow up to be that cool.

The fact that they were only living together because they were both single moms struggling to make ends meet didn't really make much of an impact on my pre-teen brain. So I watched a few minutes of the pilot, reminisced about what my life was like in 1984, Jane Curtain's mugging annoyed the hell out of me, and I turned back to the present and watched last night's Grey's Anatomy.

Anyone else remember Kate & Allie fondly?
