Meredith Grey - Love Her or Hate Her? I Love Her.

I've recently noticed that a lot of my friends (including some junkettes) and television critics have expressed dislike for Meredith Grey's character (and perhaps even Ellen Pompeo, the actress who plays her).

Well, I LOVE HER. I think she is an interesting, loveable, and complex character, and I think Pompeo is perfect for the role. (She could gain 10 lbs and still be extremely too skinny, but that's another blog.) Meredith is going through a shitty time. Her mom has Alzheimer's, her McDreamy is married to like the best OGBYN in history who also happens to be really hot, and she hasn't spoken to her Dad since she was a child and he is now coming back into her life. Oh yeah, and she made a bad decision to sleep with George and cry midway through. And alienate herself from her friends. But she feels REALLY BAD. And she realizes her own limitations and weaknesses and as George said during last week's episode, she is KIND.

I'll even go so far to say that she is my favorite character on the show. So there.

I am on the fence about Meredith. I do like that she is a complex character on television and there are a lot of nuances to her personality. However, I think she is ultimately irresponsible with the feelings of others and quite selfish, and I can't really forgive that. No matter how tough life may be for her I don't think it excuses her carelessness.

However, the one character I beleive is more selfish is McDreamy. It's fine to be at an in-between point with his wife, but his consistent emotional cheating isn't fair to Addison (who I love) or to Meredith. Even more unforgivable.

In the end, this show really does not have a lot of sympathetic characters. George and Preston, I think. That's about it.

I guess where we disagree, Holt, is that I think I'd like to have her as a friend. She wouldn't annoy me at all in that way.

I don't like her. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the show and have only seen a few episodes. But what are her good qualities supposed to be? She doesn't come across as particularly interesting or funny or smart or compassionate. Like, would you want to have dinner with her? What would you talk about (other than her)?

I think she is supposed to be smart, because she is considered one of the top residents at the hospital. And I guess she is brave (she did stick her hand on the bomb). But you don't even see that much of those qualities.

And I agree with Laura Holt on Ellen Pompeo (I would be surprised if anyone disagreed). Her skeletal frame is painful to look at. And if you think her skin looks bad when you watch, try watching on a big screen HDTV. It's not pretty.

I never liked Carrie, actually. I couldn't stand the way she talked--her whole too cool for school attitude really grated on me.

I don't think that Carrie was as careless with the feelings of others as Meredith is. Although she was pretty careless as well (poor Aiden).

Also, she was funnier. I guess what it boils down to is that a sense of humor and a quick wit go a long way with me. I'm probably a sociopath.
