The Death of Christopher Moltisanti

SPOILERS. Okay, if you watched the show and are still reading, you know that Christopher, at least physically, is not dead. Yet. But his crash and burn on what was a great episode is a sign not only of his likely actual demise but provides added fodder to my point last week that everyone is out to get Tony. I don't think Christopher will be able to pull a Sammy the Bull, but the threat is there and is growing.

Christopher's biggest problem is that he can't accept who he is. (Okay, it's also the alcohol and drugs.) He thinks he is a screenwriter/film producer but the only reason Cleaver was made was because he was able to strong arm J.T. into writing it. (On a complete side note, Mrs. Bartender and I were at a Cinco de Mayo party on May 5, and I commented that Tim Daly (who plays J.T.) and Tyne Daly are siblings; there was much doubt, but your faithful bartender was proven correct. Considering their disparate looks, they are the Randy and Dennis Quaids of different gender siblings. Now back to our story.) By killing J.T., Christopher has destroyed "his" ability to be a movie writer--supposedly the thing he wants to do. And it is J.T. telling Chris that Chris "is in the mafia" that leads to the killing. By refusing to face what he is, Christopher acts like who he is. He may have the child and the suburban home, but he IS in the mafia and he is a killer and an alcoholic, and he is going to die.

Other characters were stuck also with who they are, whether trapped by their pasts or, perhaps, their genes. The genius that is Tony once again was questioning what his purpose is and why has he condemned his son to depression. Yet in his attempts to help AJ by reuniting him with some old friends, he has possibly condemned him to something worse--the life of a hood. AJ may no longer be moping around the house, but he is now helping a bookmaking operation as muscle and still freaking out. The poignant scene at the end of the episode with the seemingly happy Soprano family having a midnight supper while trouble lurks under the table may be a final moment of family happiness for this clan. (Btw, having Carm reading Fred Barnes' love letter to President Bush was classic.)

Finally, I don't think it's a red herring, but Tony's providing of the FBI with help regarding the "Arabs" or "maybe Arabians" may provide an interesting ending to the show. Remember that many top mobsters have gotten away with murder due to helping the FBI. We'll see where this leads.

Next week--things heat up with New York. I think.

After the accident, Tony put "himself" out of misery. And then out of an act of revenge, after peaking at Chris' widow's breast, escapes to Vegas, and bangs a girlfriend of his. And THEN he starts to win big at the roultete table. He then confeses to the rising sun, "I did it!"
Tony is triumphant once again Beating death, murdering a relative and benefiting financially.
I agree that the previos episode was "the last supper" for the Soprano family" Tony has always said the AJ could NEVER survive in his business. And during the funeral when he hugged his new friends, he was reminded not to lose focus on some up coming event. Remember that.
Also Tony confeses, though in a dream, to killing his best friend, cousin and nephew. Very Shakespearian. He has killed all the people that would have, WITHOUT asking, killed for him. He is alone, but he doesnt know it yet.
My prediction, he will be killed by his own men. Like Julius Ceasar. His own men know that he would kill them and he is the worst murderer out of all of them. His men kill for business reasons, were his reasons are personal. Tony lives by Tony's rules, and he will die by them.

Chris had to go as he was no longer any use to business and trust. He had shown himself to be weak and driven by manical addictictions ...He had to die ...I predict AJ will get whacked during one of his new escapades, shylocking or he will do himself in by accident leaving Tony a mental ball of screaming Jello like Al Pacino in GF 3.I think Tony will be last man standing alongside Junior in mental instituition.I also think that he will get up front and personal with Kelly Moltisanti and his men will catch wind of this leading to his unmasking of his selfish, vile, lovable, character. He is coming apart at the seems ...Last night when he said " I did it " It was not a cry of triumph like as in James Cammeron TITANIC ala Leonard Di Caprio , but a confession of self loathing. No way out , no way back....ALL IN

He said "I get it!" not "I did it!".

Check out the official website on HBO, that proves it.

Yes, he did say "I get it!" Not, "I did it."

I think it is all down hill for tony now. Although I do not see any of the New Jersey crew betraying Tony. It would be VERY suprising if they did because no hint has really been given as to dissatisfaction on behalf of Silvio, Paulie etc. I do agree with previous post about Tony now being all alone and not knowing it.

I am glad to see all these thoughtul comments (although it would probably help to post them after my post on last night's episode). As for the debate on what Tony said at the end of the episode, I had added a note to my post before I read these comments. (No debate, however, on what Drama said.)

Did anybody notice that during the car accidect scene they were listening to "Comfortably Numb" and just one or two previous episodes ago Tony had just awoken and was walking downstairs singing that same exact song? I think Tony despised Chris for his loose behaviour, drug use, opinions to take it easy on N.Y. crew and meet their terms, etc. But ironically Tony ends up doing everything he didn't like about his newphew. Also I think it is pertinent that Tony did not want to leave therapy with Dr. Milfie until Chris attempted to relate his drug addicition with Tony's therapy sessions at the BBQ. After that Tony only wanted to distance himself from psycho analysis as soon as he could. In sum, Tony is a lovable piece of shit. Should he live or die?

Yeah, Drama and Tony seemed to share the same final scene. I only wonder if Drama got to trip out with T. Drama would not last as long as Chrissy.

I love how the lyrics to the song match up with the scene. Obviously the drug references in the song, but particularly the line "I can not put my finger on it now/ the child is grown/ the dream is gone." Pretty much sums up Tony's realization of his relationship with Chris.

I think the Vegas trip is really significant, because Tony is now dead and in hell (not literally). All of the lighting and sequences match up with Tony's previous coma, except the imagery this time, particularly that devil thing and the colors and what not seem to suggest that this is hell, and not purgatory or whatever. And Tony seems to understand and even accept this. At least that's my take on this episode, which I thought was absolutely brilliant. I just gotta say stugots to anyone who thinks they are losing it, as I think it's clear that they are going out at the top of their game.

Ever notice that when someone gets bumped off you always either see the killing or evidence of it, i.e. a body or a head, etc. Except for one that I can remember, anyway: Adrianna. Suppose Sil didn't kill her. He chased her through the leaves firing shots over her head to scare the sh#t out of her and then handed her a plane ticket to Barbados and some cash and tells her if she ever shows her face again in the States, she's toast. Upon hearing of Christopher's death she no longer has to protect him and cooperates with the feds and the family begins to collapse..

Scenario #2

Furio despises Tony because of the way he treats Carmella. Secretly they have been carrying on a long distance relationship and finally Carmella gets fed up with Tony's philandering and sings to the Feds. Furio returns with immunity and sings as well and the two live happily ever after in the witness protection program. Ok, that's ridiculous......

Response:

I recall Tony meeting with Christopher in a later episode, telling him that it should be him who buries Adriana. There's no way she lives. They didn't show her getting killed off due to the fact that she was the only member within the family with any ounce of innocence.

In other words "She didn't kill anybody."

I don't recall that, but I will take your word for it.....whatever the case may be, that girl (Drama) in the last episode is the hottest chick I have ever seen!!!

I know this is a bit late, but you misunderstood this part. Tony was telling Chris to go pick up his cousin, Tony Blundetto, and that it should be him that buries him.

Remember that it's the episode after Adriana gets killed that Tony decides to kill Blundetto. And that's the episode where Tony meets Chris in the hotel room and tells him to go get his cousin, not Adriana.

Sorry for being 2 years late with this correction, lol.

Tony felt he had to kill christopher. He was on drugs and about to get arrested for it. Would he have turned?

Or at least this is how Tony tries to justify it to himself. This may have been a concern for Tony but I think he was just pissed at Chris and acted rashly. Chris had just risked Tonys' life in the crash. Hes back on drugs. Tony thinks he hates him. So Tony finishes in a moment of cold anger.

The fact that he is really upset and trying to cover for the fact comes out in the last sceen. When his words and body language are almost dubilant but his face is crying.
